HISTORY: Grace O'Malley succeeded on her own terms.  She commanded 3 galleys and a crew of 200 men. She became so wealthy and powerful that  when her sons and half-brother were taken prisoner in 1593 by the English Governor of Connaught, she petitioned Queen Elizabeth 1 for their release and was granted a face-to-face meeting with the English monarch to negotiate a truce. The English queen was so taken with the pirate queen that she granted her request, in exchange for Grace's agreeing to end her Irish rebellion and acts of piracy against England.
